Biona Organic White Spelt Penne is sourced from one of the oldest cultivated grains, and an ancient cousin of wheat; spelt. Spelt is high in fibre, has a higher content of protein and vitamins than wheat and although not gluten free, is often tolerated by some people with wheat allergies.
Cooked up al dente in about nine minutes and it held its shape perfectly in a creamy sauce, no mush at all. The texture has a nice bite that regular pasta just doesn't give me, and I feel better knowing it's packing more protein and fibre than my usual penne.
The cooking time was spot on and the texture held up beautifully even after a quick reheat the next day. I can really taste the difference in that nutty, ancient grain flavor, and the protein content is a nice bonus for a pasta.
This has become my go-to pasta for weeknight dinners, the higher protein and fibre honestly makes it feel a bit more substantial than regular stuff. It cooks up firm without going mushy, and I’m glad the 500g bag is enough for a couple of meals for two.
